Where Does "Away" Actually Go? The Hidden Journey of Your Waste
We’ve all been there: tossing a plastic wrapper into the recycling bin and feeling like we’ve done our part for the planet. It feels like the end of the story, doesn't it? We close the lid, walk away, and assume the system takes it from there.
But the reality of "away" is a bit more complex. At Leaves of Dawn, we believe that understanding this journey is the first step toward making a real impact.
The Global Journey of Plastic
It’s a long-standing reality in the waste industry that a significant amount of plastic waste doesn't stay local. Data from the Basel Action Network and reporting by The Guardian show that every year, a massive share of plastic is transported across borders, often leaving Europe entirely.
This isn't about blaming anyone, it’s simply how the system has evolved. Plastic production has simply grown faster than our ability to manage it locally.
This is why we avoid using plastic on our bamboo toilet paper. We want to reduce the "waste migration" before it starts. Between 2021 and 2024, exports to countries like Türkiye, Mexico, and non-OECD nations remained a primary way the West handled its surplus:

Why Isn't Everything Recycled Locally?
You might wonder why we don't just process everything right here. It usually comes down to a few invisible hurdles in the recycling process:
- Scale & Volume: Even the best systems have limits. The sheer amount of single-use plastic generated today often exceeds what local plants can handle.
- Material Complexity: Not all plastics are created equal. Dark-colored materials, mixed layers (like snack bags), or contaminated items are often rejected by automated sensors.
- The Economic Reality: Sometimes, producing brand-new plastic is actually cheaper than recycling the old stuff. This makes exporting a more "cost-effective" route for lower-value materials.
What Happens at the Destination?
When plastic is exported, the outcome becomes less predictable. While many regions work hard to sort and process it, limited infrastructure can lead to materials being stored indefinitely or "downcycled." In some cases, if the quality is too low, the waste may end up in less controlled environments. The takeaway? We can’t simply recycle our way out of this.
A Different Path: Design for the Start, Not Just the End
At Leaves of Dawn, we’ve chosen a different approach. Instead of focusing only on what happens after you use our product, we focus on what happens before. By choosing sustainable bamboo toilet paper and plastic-free packaging, we’re helping reduce the pressure on a system that is already struggling.
Materials Matter: We use bamboo because it’s a fast-growing, renewable resource.
Plastic-Free Design: Our rolls are either wrapped in simple paper or offered completely unwrapped to ensure nothing ends up on a cargo ship labeled as "waste."
Simple is Better: Our packaging is designed to be easily processed locally—no confusing dark pigments or mixed materials.
A Small Shift That Adds Up
There’s no single "magic" solution to the global plastic challenge, but small, consistent changes make a huge difference over time. By choosing eco-friendly bathroom products, you aren't just recycling, you’re preventing the waste from ever existing in the first place.
Whether you prefer our hygienic paper-wrapped rolls or our unwrapped bamboo rolls, you're making a choice that helps keep our oceans and communities a little cleaner.
Thanks for being part of this journey with us.
With care,
The Leaves of Dawn Team
